Jermaine Wright, 18, from Coburg Crescent on the Palace Road estate, said: “I did not really have a role model when I was growing up. There were not many people from my age from my local community want to follow a profession like law or medicine.

“Even in studying so hard for these exams there were not many people striving to do the same thing as me. But I want to show everyone that you can achieve anything you want if you put your mind to it.”

Jermaine, one of a small number of boys studying a the sixth form of La Retraite Roman Catholic girls' school, got B grades in Maths, Biology, and Chemistry, and will now study medicine at Kings College London from this September.

He hopes to become a GP so he can “work in the local community.”
