Students all over the borough were celebrating today as even more reached the top score in this year’s A levels.

See the A-level results here. At nearly every school we surveyed, the percentage of A grades increased since the previous year- in some cases dramatically.

Ernest Bevin College in Tooting saw the biggest increase in A grades with 13 per cent - up from just 4 per cent last year.

Councillor Kathy Tracey, cabinet member for children and young people’s services, said: “The overall results are up, which is good.

“I know that the media have said they’re not as hard now, but it’s just not true.

“I want to congratulate the pupils and the staff for their hard work in constantly improving our results.”

The highest achievers were at the independent Putney High School, where almost two thirds of all grades were As and well over a third of pupils scored three or more As.

In the public sector, Graveney School in Furzedown scored the highest grades- followed by Burntwood School in Tooting and St Francis Xavier Sixth Form College in Balham.

Meanwhile, Southfields Community College saw a marked increase in A-C grades, jumping from 50 per cent to 63 per cent.

Wanda Golinska, associated head, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results. Some of the pupils are going to be first generation university students. That’s just brilliant.”

Nationally, A grades rose again to 26.7 per cent - up from 25.9 per cent, but the percentage of A levels at grades A to E rose only marginally from 97.2 per cent to 97.5 per cent.

With more than 50,000 extra university applicants this year but only 13,000 more places, some experts have predicted places available through clearing could be halved.
