Surrey County Council’s catering service has beaten stiff competition to scoop an award in a healthy meals competition, and won a trip to Las Vegas to boot.

The council’s commercial services team took top spot in the secondary schools category of the Healthy School Caterer Competition, to win an all-expenses paid trip to the American School Nutrition Association’s annual conference in America.

Judges, who considered the quality of the food, staff training as well as how children were encouraged to make healthy choices, praised the council for introducing meals in line with current high street trends.

Councillor Peter Martin said: “Providing top quality produce is not enough on its own, so our 1,000 staff deserve special praise for putting their training into practice to award-winning effect.

“There will be no let-up from us in our efforts to encourage more children to eat a tasty and nutritious school meal that also provides value for money.”
