A teenager studying at Kingston College is following in her hero John Terry’s footsteps by being made captain of England.

Polly New, 18, was called up for England Colleges after rigorous trials involving 100 of the best college players in the country.

She said: "I was called into a meeting with the coaches to be told ‘Polly, you are the captain of England’. I felt unbelievably proud."

Like Terry, she has an unbeaten record over her first three matches, leading the team to victory against the England Universities team (2-1) then defeated Wales twice, both home and away (7-1 and 9-1) in the Anglo Welsh Cup.

Terry oversaw victories against Greece, Andorra and Macedonia before going on a four-match run without a win.

New is also captain of Chelsea Ladies Academy, in partnership with Kingston College where she has also completed her Level Three UEFA B Licence.

Kingston College’s Women’s Football Academy director, Stuart Noakes said: "This year we have introduced a new coaching concept at the academy which is reaping the rewards as demonstrated by Polly’s success in the England national squad."
