GCSE results in Wandsworth improved well beyond the national average this year, the council has announced.

The borough's results improved by 3.2 points - compared with a national rise of just 0.8 points.

The percentage of students gaining five or more A* to C grades including English and maths rose from 46.9 to 50.1, which is above national average of 47.6.

Students gaining these grades in any subject also also rose by five points, to 66.2 per cent.

Councillor Kathy Tracey, executive member for children and young people's services, said: "These excellent grades reflect the commitment of students and school staff across the borough. We are delighted to have built on last year’s improvements to set yet another new benchmark.”

Ernest Bevin College, Chestnut Grove School, Battersea Park School and Southfields Community College were among the top 5 per cent in the country for “value added” at GCSE. This is a measure of how much students have improved during their studies.

At Saint Cecilia’s School, which had students taking GCSEs for the first time this year, 68 per cent achieved five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

Graveney School was the borough’s highest performer, with 74 per cent of pupils attaining these grades.
