The latest exam result statistics for Merton’s secondary schools and colleges show a significant rise in the grades across the borough.

The percentage of pupils getting five A* to C GCSE grades including English and maths rose from 39.7 per cent to 45.4 per cent last year.

Figures have also been released showing each school’s Contextual Value Added (CVA) score.

This measures the progress of pupils and takes into account pupils’ backgrounds and special educational needs. This figure is then compared to a national average.

The highest score in the borough went to the Harris Academy Merton in Wide Way, Mitcham - where the percentage of pupils getting five A* to C grades including English and maths rose from 28 per cent in 2007 to 38 per cent last year.

A-level results were also up in the borough, with the average A-level points total of Merton’s sixth form students rising from 624.7 to 657.4.

Councillor Debbie Shears, cabinet member for children’s services, said: "This is a major achievement for the borough.”

The figures were announced last week, following the release of provisional results last August.
