More Claygate Primary School children could be sent to a high school outside Elmbridge next year after parents were told the admission forecast was bleak.
The Foley Road school's governors met with Surrey County Council last week to discuss the issue weeks after Hinchley Wood School’s bid for an in-year admissions variation were thrown out by the Department for Education.
Governors were told the council has an obligation to provide each child with a school place, but not necessarily one of their choice.
This school year some Claygate children starting high school for the first time were allocated places as far as Epsom and Ewell High School, but after an appeal were given a place at Esher CofE High.
Claire Denton-Statham, chairwoman of the Claygate Class Action campaign group, said: “The problem is the September 2014 admissions policies have already been set and that [the in-year variation] was the only option.
“There is nothing else Surrey County Council can do. It is now waiting for the initial offers to come through and see what they are. There is already talk about putting actions in place for 2015.
“The only way around it is the variation which came from the council, they showed willing but the Department for Education said no because it didn’t affect enough people.”
The action group asked parents to also consider schools in Kingston, as the county council cannot initially offer places there unless all other options have been exhausted.
