An infant school has been given the top rating by the schools inspector.

St Elphege's RC Infant School in Mollison Drive, Wallington, has been rated 'outstanding' after an Ofsted inspection earlier this year.

Among the things the inspector gave specific praise to were lesson planning, the support given to pupils and the high quality of teaching given to pupils who do not speak English as a first language.

Headteacher Frances Hawkes said: "Everyone is delighted with this report which is a tribute to the hard work of staff, children, governors and parents.

"We ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of our children and we pride ourselves on being a very welcoming community in which children can thrive."

Councillor Wendy Mathys, vice-chairwoman of Sutton Council's children, family and education committee, added: "I would like to congratulate governors, staff, parents and, of course, the children, for the hard work they have put in and the excellent results they’ve achieved."
