Primary schools in Sutton are in the top 10 in the country, according to new figures.

Almost nine in 10 - 87 per cent - of primary school children in the borough go to a good or outstanding school according to schools watchdog Ofsted. The figure puts Sutton ninth in the whole country in terms of percentage of pupils at top schools.

Top of the table is Camden, where 92 per cent of pupils go to schools rated good or outstanding, Richmond is third and Wandsworth is just behind Sutton in tenth.

The figures have been published in Ofsted's annual report, released today.

Coun Dave Callaghan, chairman of the children, family and education committee, said: "We're very proud to have some of the best primary schools in the country. To be amongst the top 10 local authorities is a great credit to our schools, teachers, governors and parents. We know mums and dads will be delighted to know their children are getting such a good start in life, and it's one of the reasons people enjoy living in Sutton after all.

"We will not be complacent though, as we want every child to be able to attend a great school in Sutton and that is where we have more work to do. That will be our focus over the coming year."

One in four children from Sutton’s state schools who apply for university go on to win a place at a Russell Group institution – the UK’s top 20 universities – with three per cent attending Oxford and Cambridge and 23 per cent going on to other elite colleges, according to the latest figures released by the Department for Education.
