A suicidal man had to be talked down by police from a railway bridge this morning after he threatened to jump.
Police and firefighters were called to Wimbledon Chase station at about 1.30am after the man had accessed the railway bridge which passes Kingston Road, the main route connecting Wimbledon and Raynes Park.
The road was shut while police negotiators were able to help the 24-year-old man, from Hampshire, to safety.
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "“BTP and Metropolitan Police officers attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 1.28am, and located a man on a railway bridge close to the location.
“Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade also attended and the man, aged 24 and from Fareham, Hampshire, was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital for an assessment.”
"The track was handed back to Network Rail at 3.44am."
