A woman and a two-year-old child were lucky to escape uninjured when their flat caught fire yesterday.
Firefighters were called to the first floor flat on Thornton Heath High Street at 5.18pm.
The occupants were already out of the property when the crew from Norbury fire station arrived, but their cat died in the blaze.
One firefighter said: "There was a lot of damage to the property, the flat was very hot and very smoky.
"It is believed the fire started around the seating area in the living room."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
