A couple in their 90s who “still hold hands in the back of the car” have celebrated 74 years together.

Bill and Phyllis Orvis, 96 and 94, of Wydell Close, in Mitcham, married in 1938 on July 31 at Wandsworth Church, shortly before the outbreak of World War Two, which separated the couple for nearly five years.

During the war Mr Orvis served as a senior mechanic stationed at bases in the Middle East and Italy, but kept in touch with his wife via letter.

On his return Mr Orvis took work as a motor mechanic at the General Post Office in Kingston, Morden, and Elephant and Castle until his retirement while Mrs Orvis worked locally in the catering business.

Their daughter, Marilyn Hone, 66, from New Malden, said: “Mum made her wedding dress and the bridesmaid’s dresses because it was just before the war and austere times.

“They didn’t go on honeymoon, but went back to family for a buffet, which I think mum provided and did all the cooking for as well.

“Mum and dad both enjoy a glass of wine or two and they have both been lucky to travel. They visited Hawaii five times.

“They still sit in the back of the car holding hands.

“I’m very proud of them and very lucky – they are lovely.”

The couple, who have three children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, were treated to a barbecue with friends and family and a night in a Berkshire hotel where they received a card from the Queen.
