While Team GB swept up the gold medals, the Elmbridge Street Cleaning team swept the streets.

Thousands of spectators flocked to the borough to watch the cycle races, resulting in the largest street cleaning operation ever seen in Elmbridge.

A 90-strong team swept, litter picked and emptied bins all day and continued the clean up throughout the night, ensuring a spotless cycle route during and after the three days of events.

Councillor Glenn Dearlove said: “Months of preparation and team work took place to ensure streets were clean for the safety of the cyclists as well as providing a pleasant atmosphere for spectators.

“This impressive task by the council’s environmental care team and their contractor Veolia environmental services, was completed smoothly, with minimum disruption and all parties are to be congratulated for their input.”

A council spokesman said normal street cleaning services were suspended in order to fulfil the task and would be back on schedule soon.
