By Sim Comfort, chairman of Wimbledon Park Heritage Group
As Chairman of the Wimbledon Park Heritage Group I take great pride in the achievements of the group in partnership with the London Borough of Merton in Wimbledon Park.
Together we have taken Wimbledon Park from being strewn with both graffiti and litter and being a scene for anti-social behaviour.
The paddling pool was broken, the tennis courts unplayable, the gates broken and the Revelstoke Road entrance was an alternative to a tip for all and sundry.
We now have a park with probably the finest kids play area in south London, world class tennis courts, no graffiti and the park is as tidy as my back garden.
And Wimbledon Park is a safe place for mums to bring their toddlers and the elderly to walk and admire such things as The Waterfall Garden.
That Wimbledon Park is a busier place today than it was ten years ago, there is no doubt, but then a busy park is a safe park.
I also think that the London Underground is busier today than it was ten years ago, so we live in a world class city with lots of people in it and a fair number of them from Merton and Wandsworth have discovered Wimbledon Park and enjoy its amenities.
There’s nothing wrong with that at all. The park is large and there is room for everybody, however Ms Sheerin just might find that she has to be a bit more considerate toward other park users and appreciative of the work carried out by the residents who are part of the Heritage Group.
