Top fashion designers gave students at the University of the Creative Arts (UCA) in Epsom a master class in “up-cycling” recently.

A group of 28 students were joined by Red or Dead founders Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway who led a workshop teaching the students how to “up-cycle” by turning old garments and objects into new, fresh products.

The husband and wife team, who founded fashion house Red or Dead and also run Hemingway Design and the successful Vintage Festival, also let the aspiring students in on how they broke into the fashion world.

Sue Shearer, UCA Widening Participation co-ordinator, said: “Wayne is an honorary graduate of UCA so were delighted to welcome him and Gerardine back for this wonderful master class. The group was totally engaged with the Hemingways’ unique presentation and teaching style - their informality and ease with which they offered advice and delivered information was a revelation to the students. I definitely believe that the experience of being taught by such big names as Wayne and Gerardine inspired and engaged the group.”

The Sorrell Foundation's National Art and Design Saturday Club runs for eight-months each year between September and May and culminates in an exhibition at Somerset House in London where students show their work.
