A year’s worth of centenary celebrations kicked off at a launch party on Saturday, March 10.

The opening ceremony saw old scout leaders return to 1st Oxshott Scout Group to share stories of their time with the pack.

The scouts have a year of activities planned, with special centennial badges, history presentations and more.

The group plans to end the year with a bound photo book, as a keepsake for all the children and generations to come.

The Oxshott scout troop was first registered on March 25, 1912, and at that time was part of the Epsom District Scout Association.

Soon after the outbreak of war the Epsom District Scout Association ceased to exist and Oxshott moved under the Kingston District, then the Esher District in 1948.

The 1st Oxshott Scout Group has changed considerably in the 100 years since its first meeting at St Andrew’s Church in Oxshott.

Now meeting at the Verrey Scout Hut, the group has 90 boys and girls in beavers, cubs and scouts.

The pack offers traditional camping and outdoor pursuits to build teamwork skills and self-confidence as well as more contemporary activities such as Warhammer evenings, martial arts taster evenings and craftwork.

A spokesman said: “While being great fun and an opportunity for youngsters to let off steam through physical activity, all of the activities have an underlying theme to develop skills and to gain an understanding and appreciation both of the communities and environment in which we live.”
