The YMCA have said they are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of one their residents.

Rajendra Patel was assaulted at the Lansdowne Hostel in Lansdowne Road, Croydon, on February 21.

The 48-year-old was taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

But Mr Patel returned to hospital on March 8, where he died the next day.

Jeremy Gray, chief executive of South London YMCA said: "South London YMCA is deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Rajendra Patel.

"Mr Patel had been a resident at our Lansdowne Hostel in central Croydon since December 2009.

"He was extremely popular and well respected amongst both staff and other residents at the hostel, which provides supported housing for local homeless people.

"Police are currently investigating Mr Patel's death. Given their ongoing investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.

"We would like to take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr Patel."
