Residents gathered at Leatherhead’s new Community Garden last month for the first ever scarecrow competition.

Entries were received from residents and pupils at West Hill School in Leatherhead which were judged on their durability, colour and use of recycled material.

Gary Cates, vice chairman of the Leatherhead Community Garden committee, said: "The atmosphere was fantastic. It was good weather and turn out. A lot of effort had been put in.

"We had a family make two separate scarecrows. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we were able to do some work on the garden too with some planting and using the scarecrows. They are going to stay there now for this year and hopefully keep away the birds."

Winners were announced in the category of ‘Scarecrow that would scare itself in the mirror’ which went to ‘Bones’ made by Curie class at West Hill School and ‘Best named scarecrow’, which went to ‘Birdinator 2.0’ made by Ian and Ryan Herrick, a father and son team.

The overall winner went to ‘Philip the Bird Scarer’ made by Wendy and Tyler Herrick, a mother and son team.

All winners received vegetable planting kits and vouchers for a garden centre.
