Epsom and Ewell Council has been given more power to run young people’s services in the borough by Surrey County Council (SCC).

The borough will now be responsible for planning activities to help young people into work, training or the classroom in a bid to divert them from crime.

The new role follows a promise by Leader of the Council, Councillor David Hodge, to provide services to resident’s at the most appropriate level.

Recently each of Surrey’s 11 local authorities were given up to £200,000 each a year to pay for activities for young people and were given permission to manage verge grass cutting and hedge trimming, a responsibility usually reserved for SCC. SCC’s cabinet member for community safety Kay Hammond said: "This is another step towards making sure local services truly match the needs of the community. The county council’s approach is about everyone working together as one team, whether we are a council, a voluntary group or a business, in the best interests of Surrey."
