Babies born on leap day were given a special certificate to mark their remarkable birthday.

St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey saw a bumper batch of 12 babies born over the “extra” 24-hour period.

Alexandra Cochrane gave birth to 7lb 9oz Cora at 8.55am on February 29.

She said: “We felt really supported by all the team here and one of our midwives worked an hour over her shift to see Cora delivered. “The unit was very busy but we never felt that we weren’t important.”

Maternity matron Alison Howker said: “As leap day is such a rare event we wanted to make it extra special for the new mums and babies so gave each a born on leap day certificate and hand knitted baby blanket to take home – after all, they technically won’t have another birthday on this date for four years.”
