Library cards marking Surrey’s role in the upcoming Olympic Games are now available across the county’s libraries.

Launched to celebrate London 2012, the cards are free to new joiners, £2 for existing members or £5 to purchase the full set as a souvenir.

Five different covers are on offer, featuring canoeist Abigail Edmonds, from Guildford, and Surrey’s cycling time trial and road race event.

Edmonds is a member of the Wey Kayak Club in Guildford and came fourth at the 2010 European Championships in the K4 500m.

The 2012 Olympic cycling time trial and road race track incorporates a large part of Surrey, with the race passing through Elmbridge amongst other towns.

Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for community services, Denise Saliagopoulos, said: “The 2012-themed cards are just one of the ways our libraries are celebrating the Games coming to Surrey.

“They will also host themed events and quizzes and will become ‘pop-up’ tourist information points during the Games to help cater for the influx of tourists and to promote local attractions and businesses.

“It’s also a great opportunity to showcase our talented athletes.”
