Tram services in Mitcham will be suspended for three weekends later this year while works are carried out to speed up services.

Trams travelling through Mitcham Junction and Mitcham stations are currently only able to travel at 18kph, but the changes should mean they are able to travel at 50mph as they do on the rest of the Wimbledon branch.

Transport for London (TfL) contractors will begin a three month programme of twin tracking works at the two Tramlink stops.

Most of the works will be carried out on weekdays, starting from Thursday, March 8, but the following three weekends will see no trams stopping at Mitcham Junction nor Mitcham:

  • April 7 and 8 (Easter Weekend);
  • June 9 and 10; and
  • June 16 and 17.

A TfL spokeswoman said: “The works are planned to keep service disruption to an absolute minimum and they fall outside of major events, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Wimbledon Championships.”
