Croydon Council is helping business in the borough build trade with China and India.

The new Gateway Asia programme was launched at an event at the Jury's Inn hotel, where 25 local businesses heard how the scheme can help increase their trading skills in south east Asia and help build their international business.

Gateway Asia is funded by the European Regional Development Fund which aims to support economic regeneration and help to create jobs.

Paul Pledger, the CEO of South London Business which manages the scheme, said: "Being in business at the moment is tough and companies need to ensure they have first rate customer service to ensure they retain their existing customers.

"But they also need to attract new business and that doesn't just have to be from south London.

"Through Gateway Asia we are trying to encourage local companies to think about trading with India and China and building a portfolio of international clients.

"We aim to provide the information and advice needed to get companies trading overseas and just as importantly, giving them the confidence to try it."

South London Business aims to have more than 80 local companies signed up to Gateway Asia by September.
