An environmental movement dedicated to encouraging less dependency on fossil fuels has set up a community garden allowing residents to grow their own food.

Crystal Palace Transition Town (CPTT) was set up in 2010 and has collected more than 200 members running projects focusing on energy saving and promoting sustainable produce.

One of the founding members Andy Bodycomb said: "It’s about awareness raising and empowering local people in the face of inaction from Governments and Industry and rediscovering the communities that we used to rely on.

"It’s also about community building and developing a sense of local resilience".

Offered access to Westow Park in Upper Norwood by group Friends of Westow Park, CPTT has set about planting vegetable beds and fruit bushes with four plots to allow crop rotation.

The idea is the brainchild of member and food writer, Rachel de Thample.

She said: "There are lots of mouth-watering things planned like elderflower cordial and jam-making events, summer herbal tea parties and more."

The garden is hoped to become a meeting point for residents to swap gardening tips and learn more about creating their own food garden.

On Saturday the group will hold a full day of activities around Westow Hill including a bicycle-powered chocolate fountain, and fair-trade wine tasting at Gautama Bar.
