A scholarship worth more than £25,000 will be offered in memory of a head teacher and receptionist brutally murdered by their son.

Barry Dighton, head teacher at Elmhurst School, South Croydon for 20 years and Elizabeth Dighton who taught at the school and was head receptionist, were killed in a frenzied knife attack by their son Daniel in 2009.

As a tribute to the much-loved couple the all-boys private school has established a Dighton Memorial Scholarship offering three years free tuition for promising children not able to afford the school.

Charles South, executive head of Elmhurst School, said: "Barry was very keen the school help children who were perhaps sent to us by Croydon Council because of their home situation, it was extremely important to him. By creating this Barry and Elizabeth will be remembered for what they did for the school long after people who knew them have moved on."

The scholarship will be handed to one boy entering year 3 in September 2012 who will be provided with full funding for their time at the school, which costs £2,900 a term.

The entrance exam for the scholarship will be held on Tuesday March 20.
