A new football academy for disadvantaged youngsters exchange training for volunteering.

Kinetic Academy offers football training days at the weekend and in the school holidays at a minimal cost.

In return the players have to complete a minimum of three hours work experience, either coaching or officiating football matches for local clubs and schools.

The academy which trains at Royal Russell school, was set up by three graduates who recently completed sports related degrees.

Coach Harry Hudson said Kinetic aimed to provide young people with good future prospects, including a trial at a professional football club, a scholarship in an American University, paid employment as a football club or referee.

The 22-year-old of Shirley Avenue, Croydon, said: "When I was younger I wanted to be a footballer.

"I went to professional clubs for my youth teams but I didn't make it.

"Kinetic Academy is about working with groups in south London and trying to use the power of sport to help people get on to other things."
