A wheelchair athletics scheme has been given a £2000 boost.

Paralympians of the future are set to benefit after a £1925 grant from Balfour Beatty.

Double Paralympic gold medallist and five-times London Marathon winner David Weir presented the grant on Tuesday 21 February.

Weir, who represented Sutton at the London Youth Games as a youngster, said: "I am delighted to see the level of investment from the Balfour Beatty Sports Development Grants with 95.8FM Help a Capital Child.

"Taking part in sport as a disabled young person has many challenges from transportation to buying equipment to exposure to appropriate competition – particularly for those who attend mainstream schools. These investments will go some way to helping deliver a meaningful legacy for disability sport in London."

Regular Sunday afternoon training sessions are set to begin in the Sutton Arena Leisure Centre as part of the investment.

Two athletic coaches will be present at each session and will give the young athletes basic introductory coaching.

All the athletes will then have the opportunity to be included in the Sutton squad for the London Youth Games. Sutton's Sport Development Officer, Beverley Rand, said: "The grant will enable us to organise some specific athletics sessions for children with special needs. It enables us to provide a specialist coach to introduce the basics of athletics to children who may not have previously been involved in athletics."
