Andrew Howard gave up his job as chairman of the Croydon and Surrey Downs Community NHS Trust last month to run as the official Labour candidate in the Hampshire constituency.
In the closely fought two-party ballot, the Lib Dems secured a 12 per cent swing to wrestle the seat from the Conservatives.
Legislation had prevented Mr Howard from contesting elections while a NHS Trust chairman.
