A 104-year-old from south Cheam is believed to be the oldest person to become a British citizen.

Taufeek Khanjar, who is originally from Iraq, took part in a citizenship ceremony on Wednesday.

Mr Khanjar, who is originally from Iraq, said he was "very happy" with his new status.

The former jewellery maker, who is a widower with four sons and two daughters, said the secret of his long life was to never lose his temper.

Mr Khanjar, who took an oath to the Queen at the ceremony at Surrey County Council's headquarters, said: "I take it in my stride. If the world capsized I still wouldn't strain myself."

He said: "I keep busy by watching television, playing cards, reading and listening to music. I also like to repair watches and other broken items."

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Mr Khanjar was immensely proud to become a British citizen. Everyone was delighted to play a part in making his dream come true.”
