A man who was killed in a road smash in Ewell last month has been named.

Alexander Mpare Mante, 46, from Morden, was killed when his green Honda Civic collided with railings opposite Ewell East Railway Station at about 4.40am on Tuesday, January 10.

Mr Mante, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to St Georges Hospital in Tooting but later died from his injuries.

A post mortem was carried out last week which showed that he had died as a result of injuries consistent with the impact of collision.

Tributes were laid for Mr Mante, who is a known member of the Trinity Baptist Church in West Norwood, at the site of the crash.

It is the second accident at the same spot along the road in the last month raising questions of the road’s safety.

Five people, including four pensioners, were taken to hospital last month after three cars collided at the same spot near to Ewell East Railway Station.

A Surrey County Council spokesman said: "Road safety is a top priority for us, and any fatality or casualty is a major concern.

"Our thoughts are with this gentleman’s family and friends. We cannot comment on the circumstances of the accident while the police are still investigating.

"The police will let us know if they think the condition or layout of the road contributed in any way, and if so we will explore possible solutions.

"We meet regularly with the local police to discuss areas of concern, and are always willing to listen to residents' issues with specific locations."

An inquest into Mr Mante’s death has been opened and adjourned.
