Voices in his head told a jilted ex-boyfriend to murder his partner after stalking her using Facebook, the Old Bailey heard.

Clifford Mills set up the bogus profile in the name of “Charlie Manning” and bombarded ex Lorna Smith with messages after she split with him following a four year relationship.

The 49-year-old defendant is alleged to have stabbed 45-year-old grandma Mrs Smith, from Shirley, to death at his flat in Brixton on February 3 last year.

Her body was found with a plastic bag over her head and the Oasis song “Stop all the Clocks” playing on loop.

Mr Mills had run off with two bags of possessions but handed himself in to St Thomas’ Hospital telling staff a voice called “Stan” in his head had made him do it.

Prosecuting, Zoe Johnson QC said the packed bags, left at in the basement of flats in Hammersmith, west London, demonstrated Mr Mills had planned to kill Mrs Smith.

Mrs Johnson said he killed her due to "murderous jealousy" rather than any voice in his head.

The court heard how internet searches made in January on Mr Mills’ computer, recovered by police, included “samurai sword sale”, “death points” and “killing with a knife”

The defendant and Mrs Smith had been in a relationship between 2002 and 2006 and had remained in regular contact after their split.

But the court heard how Mrs Smith, who worked at Sainsburys in West Wickham, had sent Mr Mills a text message in January last year saying she had met someone new, Tony Hersey.

The mesage read: “Things are changing and it is time to move on. Got myself a lovely bloke.”

Defence witness Professor Coid, an expert in forensic psychology, told the jury that Mr Mills suffered from borderline personality disorder.

The court heard how Mr Mills would hear Stan in his head when he was angry such as episodes of road rage.

According to the defence, Mr Mills loved Mrs Smith but Stan hated her after she had dumped him.

Mr Mills had discovered Mrs Smith had left him because he “was not manly”, a reference to impotency problems, which left Stan “enraged”.

By the time she came round to Mr Mills’ flat on February 2, Stan was “raging” and saying “hurt, hurt, hurt”.

The jury were told as Mrs Smith made a cup of tea, Mr Mills was taken over by Stan, grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked her, saying “die, you c*nt”.

Mr Mills, of Morrish Road, Brixton, sat in a grey tracksuit and slippers in a wheelchair in the well of the court but chose not to give evidence.

He denies murder but admits manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The trial continues.
