A teenager is in a serious but not life-threatening condition after being stabbed in Wimbledon last night.

Queen's Road remains closed in both directions between Haydon's Road and Craven Gardens while police investigate the attack.

The 18-year-old was found with stab injuries outside the Green Man pub in Wildcroft Road, Putney Heath, at about 11pm last night and was taken to a West London hospital by paramedics.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers are appealing for witnesses and there have been no arrests at this time.

Anyone with information can call the police by dialling 101 or to the charity Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

UPDATE (2pm): The Met Police are continuing to investigate the scene while no one has been arrested and the victim remains in a "critical but stable condition".

Plain-clothed officers are currently sweeping the front gardens and drives in Queen's Road, opposite the Priory Church of England Primary School, which is open as usual today.

A resident, who lives across from where the attack is believed to have happened, said: "It is clear that they are looking for a knife or whatever implement was used to stab the young boy.

"They seem to be very thorough - they are wearing gloves and looking under cars, in flower pots, even through rubbish bins.

"I was home last night and didn't hear anything, so this has come to a real shock that this happened so near to my house."

UPDATE (4.15pm): Merton Police's new Borough Commander, who took charge this week, has issued a statement as part of their appeal for information about last night's stabbing.

Chief Superintendent Darren Williams said: "Violent crime is a priority for the Police at Merton and I appeal for anyone who may have seen the incident or has any information about why it happened or who was involved to contact my officers at the CID at Wimbledon Police Station on 0208 649 3126.

"People can give information anonymously if they prefer by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

UPDATE (4.30pm): The police cordon has now been lifted and Queen's Road has now been re-opened.

UPDATE (6.10pm): Another Queen's Road resident said she heard two male voices arguing at about 7.45pm last night.

She said: "I did hear some shouting but I didn't think anything of it at the time.

"I went to the living room to watch Eastenders on TV and it sounded like two men were having an argument.

"People here are saying they don't think the victim was from here and was just passing through."
