A family made a lucky escape after a mother put a deep fat fryer on a hot oven hob and sparked a fire in her kitchen.

The blaze started at about 5.50pm yesterday at a house in Randalls Park Avenue in Leatherhead.

Two crews from Leatherhead and Epsom fire stations were called to the scene and put the fire out within minutes.

No one was injured and there was minimal damage to the kitchen.

A spokesman for Leatherhead fire station said one woman evacuated the house with her children and contained the fire by closing the kitchen door.

He said: “She had the deep fat fryer on the hob and didn’t realise it was on. She did the right thing by closing the door and containing it quickly.”
