A block of flats was evacuated after a 63-year-old's record collection caught fire.

Firefighters were called to five storey Parsons House, New Park Road, Brixton Hill, at about 12.30am today.

A fire had started in the living room of one of the flats.

Firefighters are investigating what caused the fire, which is believed to have started in the occupant's record collection.

A stack of LPs was destroyed in the blaze.

The man was sleeping in his bedroom next door when he woke up due to the smoke.

He raised the alarm with neighbours. Firefighters continued an evacuation of the building when they arrived.

They put out the blaze, which was contained to the living room.

A spokesman for West Norwood fire station said the man was lucky to have woken or the fire would have been much more serious.

He did not have a smoke alarm fitted at the property.
