Mistaken commuters reported the theft of a popular statue outside Wimbledon Station this morning.

But it was soon discovered the two fat ladies statue, in the entrance to the Wimbledon Centre Court Shopping Centre, has actually been moved to safety whilst building work takes place outside the station.

A police spokesperson said: "The statue is in storage, it has been temporarily removed whilst they do work outside the station."

The statue shows two overweight women with shopping bags and is often used as a meeting place for visitors to Wimbledon.

Confused shoppers have been tweeting their disappointment of its disappearance this morning.

Molly Rogers wrote: "Crying at the fact they removed the two fat ladies from Wimbledon Station."

Tom Cross also posted: "Hearing about the plight of the two fat ladies in Wimbledon is breaking my heart."
