A road full of people peeved at drivers speeding past their houses has taken matters in to its own hands.

The people of Weston Avenue, West Molesey, fought to set up a community speed watch group when they reached the end of their tether with people persistently ignoring the speed limit.

The group consists of about 25 residents, all trained by police to use speed guns to record those flouting the law.

Those caught have their details passed on to police, who send a letter to the driver informing them of the dangers and consequences of their actions.

Since starting in November the scheme has become one of the most successful in Surrey, although some people continue to speed through the road.

Speed Watch member Tracey Spreadborough said: “Some cars take notice of it, especially those that have already been warned.

“We are just trying to make people realise we are a 30mph road and those that choose to ignore that will be dealt with by police.

“There are idiots out there that don’t take notice, but this is about making people aware and doing something proactive.

“We’ve got elderly people, disabled people and families living down here. We’re not a rat-run and people won’t get away with it if they treat it like one.”

The road is a great example of a community coming together to solve an issue.
