A driver who forgot to put on their handbrake was regretting the mistake after the car rolled into the Thames.

Shocked members of the public noticed the Volvo S40 slip into the river from Putney Embankment and float down the Thames at about 7pm on Wednesday.

A police helicopter and the Marine Support Unit were drafted in to drag the vehicle out, as well as two police cars.

It took them about half an hour to get the empty vehicle out.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Initial fear that someone may have been trapped inside, this was quickly discovered not to be the case.

"A member of the public witnessed the vehicle roll into the river, it may have been left parked with the handbrake off."

Police have since traced the owner of the vehicle.
