A man who helped rescue an injured horse rider using a quad bike and an iphone has been praised by the ambulance service for his quick thinking and resourcefulness.

Daniel Legg, a 38-year-old builder from Headley, was alerted to the accident on Sunday, January 15, after two cyclists found a woman who had passed out after falling from her horse in Sheep Walk, Walton Road, near his home.

Stuck along a bridleway inaccessible by ambulance, Mr Legg took to his quad bike rushing to the roadside to bring South East Coast Ambulance Clinician Caroline Roots, and her equipment, up the narrow path to help the woman, in her 70s.

After assessing the pensioner's injuries, Miss Roots decided to call the an air ambulance and once again Mr Legg stepped in to help navigate the helicopter to their remote location using a compass on his iphone.

He then cut down a piece of wire fence to allow the woman access to the helicopter which had landed in a nearby field.

He said: “I was up in my house and two cyclists found the lady and came up to my house. I got my quad bike and blankets to make sure she was ok. The helicopter didn’t know where we were but there’s a compass on my iphone so we were able to tell them where we were.”

Miss Roots said: "I really wanted to thank Daniel as he was so much help. He took me and my equipment on the quad bike to the scene.

"When I decided we needed an air ambulance, I was looking at the access possibilities. We were next to two fields and one was closed off with wire fencing. Danny quickly disappeared off on his quad and came back with a grinder and took the fence down without a second thought.

"After the lady was taken away on the helicopter, he was waiting with my airway bag ready on his quad bike to take me back to the ambulance. He was an absolute star."

The woman, who later regained consciousness, was flown to the major trauma centre at Kings College Hospital in London and has since returned home.

Mr Legg added: “The two guys that found her were absolutely brilliant. I would like to think other people would have done the same.”
