The mystery continues of who was the man found dead in Mitcham Common one year ago, although police have now said he may be of Hungarian origin.

The partially decomposed body of the man, believed to be at least 50 years old, was found by a member of the public in an industrial estate in Redhouse Road on January 17, 2011.

Forensic tests indicated the man probably died in September or October 2010, but a cause of death has not been established.

The inquiry into the man’s death included the use of a craniofacial identification expert at the Centre of Anatomy and Human Identification, at Dundee University, who produced a 3-dimensional image of the man’s face.

This image was used in an extensive appeal by the Metropolitan police over the last twelve months, who received information that it could be a missing person from Hungary who came to the UK and became homeless.

The man is described as white, between 5 ft 7 ins and 5 ft 9 ins tall with short dark hair. He had poor dental health and a number of his teeth were missing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 0208 721 4906 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
