A former rough sleeper, 12 police cadets and pub managers are among volunteers who are sleeping out to raise money for the homeless.

YMCA Surbiton resident Joanne Budd will be taking part in Kingston Sleep Easy as a thank you to the organisation that helps put a roof over the heads of people living on the streets.

The 38-year-old became homeless in 2006 after suffering a violent relationship, debt problems and battles with alcohol.

Having stayed with friends, in hostels, night shelters and in a tent Joanne was referred to the YMCA, where she is getting her life back on track and recently achieved an IT training award.

She said: “It’s surprising how many people I saw in the same situation as me.

“Before I was in the situation I’ll admit I thought someone who was homeless was someone who slept on a park bench. I want to make others aware that there are a lot of people out there who need help.

“I also want people to see what organisations like the YMCA have done and how they’ve helped me. Even if it makes one person listen and take note then it’s done something good.”

Pub managers Stacey Harris and Michael Larkins are swapping a night behind the bar for a night on the streets.

The couple who run the William Bourne pub in Chessington said they choose a charity to support each year and host fundraising events to raise awareness with customers.

Ms Harris said: “This year we chose to support the YMCA London South West as it’s a local charity and the work that they do reaches a number of ages and people from all walks of life.

“It will be cold but its only one night and there are so many people across the country who have to do this every night.”

Sleep Easy is taking place in Kingston Memorial Gardens on Saturday, January 28.

Entry is £10 or £5 for under 18’s and funds raised are split between organisers YMCA London South West, Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness and Faith in Action.
