Residents who have been handed a £250 note with Boris Johnson’s face on it need not call the police or assume London’s mayor has been enthroned as our new King.

The funny money was handed out at South Wimbledon station by the Green party’s London Assembly candidate for Merton, Roy Vicary, on Tuesday in a publicity stunt to highlight Mr Johnson’s close ties to City bankers.

Jenny Jones, who is running as the Green candidate for mayor in May’s election, said she would ensure the London Assembly dealt only with banks that could demonstrate they were lending to London’s small businesses.

She said: “Too much brainpower in the City is focused on casino banking rather than useful business lending.”

Merton and Wandsworth's current GLA member is Richard Tracey, a former Conservative MP and a minister in Margaret Thatcher's government.

He is standing for another four years in May's election against Wandsworth Labour councillor, Leonie Cooper, and Liberal Democrat Lisa Smart.
