Help is at hand for the digital TV switchover in April.

Everyone in Sutton will soon receive an information booklet explaining what will happen and when.

Between 10am and 4pm the Switchover Scheme information unit will appear outside Argos in Sutton High Street on Thursday January 19, and Waitrose car park in Worcester Park on Friday, January 20.

On March 28, residents will be able to drop in to the U in the St Nicholas Centre between 9am and 1 pm for extra advice.

Twelve million viewers will be affected by the change, on April 4 and 18.

Analogue viewers must convert their sets and Freeview users must retune their equipment.

Councillor Colin Stears, executive member for adult social services and health on Sutton Council, said: “All televisions can be converted to work after the digital switchover.

“With major events like the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee coming to our screens this summer, it’s important that we all do what we can to make sure that the borough’s more vulnerable residents get the support they need to make the switch.

“If you have a family member, friend or neighbour who could benefit from a bit of extra help, then please do contact the Switchover help scheme and find out what is available.”

If you already see more than five channels, you will need to retune your set. If not, you will need to buy a digital receiver for around £20 from many high street shops.

Everyone eligible for extra help will have received a letter offering practical help converting one TV set, and must respond to the letter to receive assistance.

The standard service costs £40, but some residents on income benefits may have the fee waived.

The scheme is open to those aged 75 or over, who receive or could receive disability living allowance, attendance allowance, constant attendance allowance or mobility supplement, have lived in a care home for six months or more or are registered blind or partially sighted.
