Commuters in Kingston who faced problems getting to work this morning may be delayed on their return journey as emergency engineering work continues to disrupt services.

Platforms were closed and passengers reported hour long waits for rush hour trains, after track work and signaling problems caused trains bound for central London to terminate at Surbiton and Kingston.

Despite Southwest Trains providing extra services at Surbiton station, Twitter was awash with disgruntled passengers venting their frustrations.

Paul Briant wrote: "40 minute wait on Surbiton platform for a train I could get on & it's a bloody slow one."

Huw Langridge posted: “Broken line on the track between Wimbledon and Waterloo. Everyone being turfed out of Surbiton station again, time to move to the country!"

Waterloo trains to and from Shepperton will need to change at Kingston this evening, with direct trains from Kingston, via Richmond and Wimbledon, running into central London with minor delays expected.

Jake Kelly, customer service director for South West Trains, said Network Rail was working to resume normal service as quickly as possible.

She said: "We are extremely frustrated that our passengers' journeys have been disrupted again this morning and we are sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused."

Customers were advised to check for updates on Twitter @SW_Trains and on the website www.southwesttrains.co.uk in advance of travel.
