A noisy neighbour was fined and his equipment confiscated after ignoring warnings to turn his music down.

Sean Eales caused misery to people living near to him in Demesne Road, Wallington, with his high-volume dance tunes.

He was served with a noise abatement notice in July after frustrated neighbours made a series of complaints about the loud music coming from his top floor flat.

But when the notice and a fixed penalty notice were repeatedly ignored, Sutton Council environmental health officers obtained a warrant and entered the flat to seize Mr Eales’ noise-making equipment, which included an amplifier, a CD player, a DVD player and two speakers.

He appeared before Croydon magistrates last month, where he pleaded guilty to contravening the noise abatement notice.

He was fined £100 for the offence, plus £150 court costs and a victim surcharge of £15.

The court agreed that Mr Eales could have his equipment returned to him but only on the payment of the council’s separate costs of £219.

Councillor Colin Hall, Sutton Council’s executive member for environment and climate change, said the court action should serve as a warning to other noisy neighbours, and encourage people to complain about them.

He said: “This man now faces having to pay out almost £500 for being inconsiderate and refusing to listen to our advice. People should be aware that being a noisy neighbour can cost them dear.”
