A high speed police chase resulted in a suspect scaling a block of flats and threatening to jump.

Police chased a suspected burglar through the streets of Wallington on Thursday night (January 12) after receiving reports of man peering through windows with a torch.

The suspect made off over garden fences sparking a major police response in which a dog unit and the police helicopter were drafted in.

For the next hour, the suspect clamoured over garage roofs and hid under cars in Demense Road, Ross Road, Carew Road and Woodcote Road.

At around midnight, a man matching the description of the suspect was seen on the roof of the Penny Royal block of flats and threatening to jump.

While waiting for specialist police negotiators to arrive, officers from Sutton convinced the man to come down and give himself up.

Moments later, the 23-year-old suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of a leg injury and then to Sutton Police station for questioning in connection with a serious assault.

The man was arrested for an ABH in Croydon and has been bailed to return to Croydon Police Station in February.
