Aspiring politicians are being urged to stand for election at the borough’s upcoming Youth Elections.

Those aged between 11 and 19 who want to be Lambeth’s next youth mayor, deputy youth mayor, or youth parliament member, must register by Friday, January 27.

The youth mayor will be voted in this March by 11 to 19-year-olds who live, work or study in Lambeth.

Once elected, they are then given a budget of £25,000 to spend on projects that could help the area’s young people.

Lambeth’s cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Peter Robbins, said the project was going from “strength to strength”, with more than 10,000 votes cast last year.

Current youth Mayor, David Oyedele, 16, a student at St Frances Xavier College, said: “I’ve had an amazing time, learned a lot, and helped some great projects take off. I wanted to be mayor so I could make a difference and improve opportunities for young people and I've achieved that.

“Young people want to be involved in local democracy and the Youth Mayor and Youth Parliament is perfect for giving them that chance to be involved.”
