A paranoid schizophrenic killed his mother and wounded the mother of his child, a jury has concluded, after only five minutes deliberation.

Jermaine Gilchrist, 36, of North Street, Huddersfield, was found to have killed Beryl Gilchrist, also known as Nazarine Samuel, on June 24 2010 at her home on Miller Road, Croydon.

Judged to be unfit to plead by Judge John Bevan on Tuesday January 3, Gilchrist was sentenced to stay at Rampton Secure Hospital for an indefinite period on Wednesday January 4 following a two-day trial at the Old Bailey.

He said: “Jermaine Gilchrist should be regarded as an extremely dangerous person and I conclude that the appropriate course of action is to detain him at Rampton Hospital without limit of time.”

Earlier the court heard Gilchrist had told police he was acting on behalf of God.

A jury heard Mr Gilchrist, diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic by his doctor Kim Page, told police officers he murdered the 58-year-old church pastor after a revelation from God.

In an interview on June 25, 2010 he said: "I ain't mad, I'm not crazy, I don't hear voices, I serve a God much greater than myself. These are the things God expects from me. He expected me to judge her."

He told police he "woke up" in his 20s and realised she must die but gave her "10 years mercy".

Describing the attack he said they argued over a preacher on a Christian TV channel in her living room before he attacked her with a kitchen knife stolen from Poundstretcher earlier that day.

Beryl Gilchrist sustained a single 9cm deep puncture wound through the side of her neck, cutting her jugular vein.

Pathologist Dr Ben Swift also revealed she had "defence injuries" on her hands from warding of an attack.

The jury also heard a recording of the 999 call made by Mr Gilchrist at 8.17pm that night.

Speaking to communications officer John Winton based at Lambeth, Mr Gilchrist said: "She has been stabbed to death - I stabbed her."

At the time of the incident Mr Gilchrist was on police bail due to return to Huddersfield police station over an alleged attack on his former partner and the mother of his child.

Mr Gilchrist was also found to have stabbed Joanne Helm was in the Yorkshire town on May 6 at the trial at the Old Bailey.
