A bedraggled robin has beaten off stiff competition from frogs, lizards and foxes to take pride of place in a photography competition.

The ruffled back garden visitor could find himself with a new home after pensioner Albert Stace’s shot was rewarded with a bird box, hanging feeders and wildflower seeds.

The North Cheam snapper said: “I'm very pleased to have won, and the gardening goodies should come in useful for encouraging more of our feathered friends.

“I'm lucky enough to get a lot of visitors in my back yard, and I've found that letting parts of my garden overgrow a little has made it a much more welcoming place for wild creatures.

“I hope that the competition has helped more people to become aware of the wildlife that lives all around us."

Keith Thomas won second place in Sutton Council’s photography competition with his photographs of dragonflies and frogs.

Councillor Colin Hall, executive member for environment and climate change, said: "Sutton has some of the most diverse wildlife in London, which was very much in evidence in the beautiful photos people submitted.

“Most London residents don't get the chance to see rare albino squirrels and wildflower meadows on their doorsteps, so I'm glad that so many Sutton residents have been exploring the natural world around them."
