Flames and smoke engulfed a three-storey building set to be turned into a Tesco Express late last night.

The cause of the blaze at the site in George Street, Croydon, which is currently undergoing renovation, is not known.

No-one was hurt in the fire and firefighters said the security guard was outside when it started at about 2am.

Crews from at least six fire stations in south-west London helped get the fire under control, with the last engines still damping down at the scene after dawn.

A fire service spokesman said: “There’s limited damage. We managed to control it.

"There’s damage throughout the building – fire damage in the central area and smoke damage, but because it’s under renovation the damage was limited because there was not too much to be damaged.”

The scene was cleared earlier this morning, and trams are operating normally, but some windows were smashed, and others have been left open to air the building out.
