An award-winning husband and wife who do a paper round together will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary next week.
Reynolds and Ruby Daurat, of Melbury Gardens in west Wimbledon, will have been married for 60 years on December 29 after meeting in Mauritius when they were at neighbouring schools.
After settling in Wimbledon in 1961 and raising four children, Mr Daurat decided to earn some pocket money seventeen years ago by doing a paper round for his local newsagent, Mr Harish.
His wife, who he described as his first love, joined him four years later and they have delivered newspapers ever since.
Mr Daurat, 83, said: “Ruby was my first love and still is.
“We enjoy delivering the papers to our wonderful customers, come rain, snow, floods, we like to please our customers and enjoy the interaction with them. It also keeps us fit.”
Mr Harish put the Daurats forward for the annual National Federation of Retail Newsagents awards in Park Lane last year, where they won the “News Deliverer Merit Award”.
When asked what kept them together so long, Mrs Daurat, 79, said: “We share a good sense of humour, at times it hasn't been easy.
“But I believe in our marriage and we had our vows renewed, which helped to strengthen the partnership.
“I'm still waiting for my honeymoon though.”
